A New Beginning, A Perfect Fit: Mylan Graham's Journey to Notre Dame
In the world of college football, Notre Dame's approach to the Transfer Portal has remained consistent, even as the 2026 season approached. The Irish, having already signed an impressive high school recruiting class, turned their attention to the portal to address specific roster needs. However, this time around, there was a crucial difference - the ability to recruit undergraduate transfers, which opened up exciting opportunities to strengthen the team.
Enter Mylan Graham, a former Ohio State receiver, who became a key piece in Notre Dame's puzzle. But here's where it gets intriguing - did the Irish really need another field receiver with Jordan Faison returning and Elijah Burress on the rise? On paper, it might not have seemed like an obvious need, but as they say, sometimes the best moves are the ones that surprise you.
Faison, a talented receiver, is just one sprained ankle away from turning a strength into a concern. This is where Graham's addition becomes a game-changer. His presence gives Notre Dame the flexibility to move Faison inside to the slot when needed, ensuring the team doesn't sacrifice depth while getting more talent on the field. But what exactly does Graham bring to the table?
According to his long-time receiver coach, Dre Muhammad, Graham, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 195 pounds, is a native of Fort Wayne with a unique skill set. "He has exceptional route-running ability," Muhammad explains. "He can run routes with the best of them and catches the ball incredibly well. But what sets him apart is his ability after the catch. He has that quick twitch and can make defenders miss."
While Graham's stats at Ohio State might not have been eye-popping, context is key. He spent two seasons playing behind Carnell Tate, but instead of hindering his development, Muhammad believes this experience accelerated it. "He's improved his strength and understands what it takes to give his all. He knows how to focus on the main thing. Over the last two years, he's fine-tuned his skills and improved significantly."
When Graham entered the Transfer Portal, Notre Dame wasn't initially on his radar. However, once the Irish confirmed they could admit him, things changed. Marcus Freeman, Mike Denbrock, and Mike Brown made a strong push, and Graham quickly saw the appeal of South Bend. "It was about a fresh start," Muhammad said. "A chance to create a new impression in a championship-level environment, but with a different feel."
Freeman's connection with Graham might have been the deciding factor. As a former five-star prospect, Graham also visited Auburn and was courted back to Columbus. But Freeman's ability to care and express that care beyond the game made a lasting impression. "Mylan values those who value him outside of football," Muhammad explained. "That was a key point for him."
Graham was also drawn to Denbrock's offensive system. Denbrock had recently worked wonders with Malik Nabers, a 6-foot, 200-pound receiver who thrived under Denbrock's guidance at LSU. In 2023, Nabers had an incredible season with 89 receptions, 1,569 yards, and 14 touchdowns. "Denbrock's historical success was important," Muhammad stated. "Nabers' productivity and style under Denbrock matched Mylan's potential, and I think that's what sealed the deal."
During his visit to Notre Dame, Graham even had a phone call with Nabers. It wasn't about selling Notre Dame; instead, Nabers shared his experiences playing for Denbrock and in his offense. "It added tremendous value," Muhammad said. "Notre Dame provided an opportunity for Mylan to not only compete but to be utilized."
Muhammad, who has trained athletes in Fort Wayne for years, has a remarkable track record of producing elite Power 4 football players. Notre Dame safety Tae Johnson is a product of Muhammad's program at Traction AP and is close friends with Graham. In fact, without Johnson personally picking up Graham and driving him to South Bend, the visit might not have happened.
"Tae did an excellent job of showing Mylan the benefits of Notre Dame," Muhammad said. "Their close relationship made the decision easier. Mylan is going to bring something special to Notre Dame, and Notre Dame will provide him with an incredible opportunity. It's a mutually beneficial situation."
Traction AP has a long history with Notre Dame, having sent players like Jaylon Smith, Tyler Eifert, and Ben Skowronek through the program, with many others visiting campus. This history has given Muhammad a unique perspective on the program's evolution under Freeman.
"Coach Freeman is very personable, and that makes a huge difference," Muhammad explained. "It makes it easier for someone like me and, more importantly, for the players to navigate the realities of college football. You know there's genuine care, and that makes having those tough conversations and coaching moments possible. I can't speak much about Brian Kelly, but based on my experience and what I've heard, Marcus Freeman is in a league of his own. He's a leader, passionate, and cares deeply about his players."
